Registrations Close – Monday 6 June 2022 at midnight! Don’t miss out!

All art is subjective. Or at least that’s what artists want you to believe. Whilst it is true for the most part, there are still many objective things that artists and those wanting to create art must do for their work to be enjoyed by others.

Welcome to ILT’s Directors Masterclass.

Have you ever thought about wanting to bring to life a story on a stage? Have you thought…’that acting gig’s not for me, but I love to create stories?’

Do Steven Spielberg, Jane Campion, James Cameron, Quentin Tarantino or Alfred Hitchcock ring any bells? While these people were great film directors, they’re also famous for another thing – not being actors! There is no rule that to be in theatre, you need to act. In fact, actors wouldn’t have any opportunities if it wasn’t for directors.

This is where you come in.

39 Steps Rehearsals – November 2021

On the weekend of June 11 and 12, 2022, ILT is holding a Directors’ Masterclass. This is an opportunity for people who have never directed before to come and learn the craft. It’s also an opportunity for apprentice directors and experienced directors to further develop their skills and knowledge. This opportunity will be a weekend filled with ideas, knowledge and skills development for anyone interested in theatre and particularly for those wanting to be a theatre director or be a better theatre director.

Topics to be covered over the weekend include, but are not limited to:

  • Planning
  • Budgeting
  • Publicity
  • People Management
  • Auditions
  • Blocking and Movement
  • Script Interpretation – How to know when to move
  • Characterisation
  • Sound and Lighting
  • Set Design
  • Costuming

Because this weekend of workshop’s primary focus is on providing opportunities to develop new directors for ILT, the weekend will allow aspiring directors to be mentored in the direction of a 10-minute play of their own choice. It will then be open to those directors (if they so wish) to showcase their work in a performance of these plays on the weekend of 22, 23, and 24 July.
